Abstract:

Railways are an environmentally friendly means of transport but noise and vibration are increasingly becoming a source of objections to new railway developments as well as existing operations. It is therefore important to understand the sources of noise and vibration and the underlying physical mechanisms. How is this sound and vibration generated and how does it propagate into the environment? What are the prospects for reducing it? From rolling noise, to curve squeal, aerodynamic noise and ground-borne noise and vibration, these sources have different characteristics and influencing factors. The presentation will discuss current research at the ISVR in these various aspects of railway noise and vibration with a focus on the use of models to solve practical problems.
